CCPA’s 2009 PRETHINNING ESTIMATE TOTALS 460,318 TONS
The Association’s 2009 prethinning estimate conducted by our Directors, Delegates, and Committeemen during the week of May 11 amounts to 460,318 tons. This estimate represents a 10% increase from last year’s 419,699 tone crop but is still 6% below the 489,796 ton crop delivered in 2007.
(The industry’s 10 year average delivery volume is 488,155 tons.) The 2009 prethinning estimate covers nearly 8,800 acres, or 36% of the industry’s projected a 24,423 bearing acres for 2009. The largest yield increase is occurring in the Yuba/Sutter area with this year’s projected yield of 18 tons/acre up 25% from last year’s frost damaged yield of only 14.4 tons/acre.
Modesto yields are projected to be up 7% from year-ago levels (less frost damage in this area during 2008) with an average yield of 20.5 tons/acre. Kingsburg is the only area expecting a decrease in yield this year with an estimate of 18.5 tons/acre vs. 19 tons/acre last year.
The California Ag Statistics Service has also released their May 1 cling peach crop estimate which amounts to 430,000 tons. Since 1997, the State’s estimate has the best track record of being the closest to the actual peach crop. The State will also release a June 1 crop estimate on June 11 and the industry’s Block x Block estimate will be released the week of June 15.
