Vietnam: Cashew processor loses land rights after shady deal
The HCM City People’s Committee has ordered the withdrawal of 4,300 sq.m in public land leased by a local cashew nut company in District 11, which was recently found illegally selling assets to another company that wanted to build a school.
The Lac Long Quan Company had leased the land from the city to Dai Thanh Company as part of a co-operation agreement to build a private school.
The decision was made by Nguyen Thanh Tai, deputy chairman of the committee, after an investigation was made by officials from the city’s Department Natural Resources and Environment. The decision also assigned the District 11 administration to manage the land.
According to the city Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption, the asset conveyance of the company violated the law on land management and the decision to lease the land made in 2006.
The case attracted the attention of the city administration, following accusations by workers for the company that the company sold the land Dai Thanh Company for VND11 billion (US$578,900). Tai has also ordered the department to work with district-level authorities to conduct an inspection on companies that lease public land in the city.
